the “ZERO” key.

8. The LCD will show “TDL” for Threshold Detection Level. Optionally a SELF TEST may be

performed in this mode. To perform a SELF TEST, fully open the Flow Metering Valve,

wait about 10 seconds and then press the “SELF TEST” key. To pass the SELF TEST the

flow must be sufficient to produce a reading greater than or equal to the calibration target

value (typically 1.00 %). If less than the calibration target value the SELF TEST will fail and

ERROR will be displayed. Check the gas supply and all valves prior to repeating the test.

All SELF TEST results are recorded. Fully close the Flow Metering Valve after performing

a SELF TEST, wait about 30 seconds and do not sniff the exhaust port during a SELF

TEST. When a TDL test is to be performed, slowly open the Flow Metering Valve counter-

clockwise 1/4 – ½ turn. Wait about 30 seconds and then position the nose approximately

3/4 inch (20 mm) above the exhaust port and sniff the exhaust. Your upper lip may

lightly

touch the front edge of the exhaust port.

9. If no odor is detected in the exhaust, repeat step 8.

**NOTE** The user should frequently pause when sniffing for odorant by moving the nose

away from the instrument, breathing fresh air and then continue testing. This precaution

is necessary because the sense of smell

fatigues rapidly during this type of test.

10. The first faint smell of odor is called the Threshold Detection Level.

Considerable variation

will exist among individuals in detecting this threshold level. When detected press the

“READ” key to record the corrected reading with GNSS location and timestamp.

11. The LCD will show “RDL” for Readily Detectable Level. Slowly open the Flow Metering

Valve another 1/4 – 1/2 turn, wait about 30 seconds and then position the nose

approximately 3/4 inch (20 mm) above

the exhaust port and sniff the exhaust.

12. If the exhaust does not have a readily detectable odor repeat step 11. If the exhaust has a

readily detectable odor, press the “READ” key to record the corrected reading with GNSS

location and timestamp. This reading is the Readily Detectable Level which should be

detected by the average person’s sense of smell.

13. The ODORATOR 2 will now automatically go into PURGE mode. The Flow Metering Valve

must be closed while in PURGE mode. In PURGE mode the last set of readings may be

reviewed by pressing either the “↑” or “↓” keys to scroll through the last ZERO, TDL and

RDL values. After the PURGE mode times out the ODORATOR 2 will automatically power

off and enter SLEEP mode. The LCD shows a flashing asterisk “ * ” to allow the user to

abort PURGE mode and re-enter CONDITIONING mode by pressing the “ * “ key. The

user may also choose to press and hold the “PWR” key to turn the ODORATOR 2 “OFF”

after sufficiently purging the flow system by entering SLEEP mode (“ZZZZZ” will briefly

display).

14. When testing is complete, close the gas supply outlet valve, disconnect the sample hose

from the gas supply outlet and verify the Flow Metering Valve is closed. Do not store the

sample hose in the instrument’s case. A mesh bag attached to the handle is included for

tubing and fittings storage.
